The Wines of Can Axartell

The wine portfolio of Can Axartell beautifully reflects Mallorcan vinification traditions of both yesteryear and today. As such, the program intentionally encompasses grape varieties both indigenous and international. The range of wines can be divided into three categories:

Everyday Wine
Wines such as Rosado, Blanco and Tinto Uno harness Mallorca’s incredible inherent freshness into delicious and uncomplicated pleasures. The wines are vinified in stainless steel tanks to better preserve this brightness before release onto market in the year following harvest.

Food Friendly Wines
Wines such as Corum (white) and Terrum and Ventum (red) offer a more serious complexity enhanced by extended barrel aging. The white wine is matured in large fuder barrels, the reds in French barriques. These food-friendly wines show extraordinary depth and complexity.

Special Editions
Can Axartell also periodically offers small-batch special edition bottlings. The first of these, The Artist, features a label painted by popular artist Dionís Bennàssar, who hails from nearby Pollença. This special release reflects the team’s interest in highlighting the individual varieties that each vintage sometimes blesses above all others.

Everyday Wine

Blanco

Straw yellow with greenish flashes that reflect its vivacity and freshness. Bright and clear, it shows an attractive luminosity in the glass. The nose displays good aromatic intensity, the result of the expression of the variety Malvasía de Banyalbufar. The pome fruits (pear, apple) stand out, accompanied by citrus tones and a background of white flowers that gives it a very pleasant character.

It is a very fresh wine, with an acidity that remains on the palate and provides a great durability and persistence. The two varieties (Malvasía de Banyalbufar and Premsal) perfectly reflect the uniqueness and kindness of the Mediterranean character in perfect harmony. The four months aging on lees contributes to the complexity and creaminess of the wine, making it more elegant and pleasant.

Name: Blanco
Vintage: 2019
Grapes: Premsal Blanc, Malvasía
Alcoholic fermentation: Stainless tank
Alcohol: 12,5 % vol.
Total acid: 6,43 g/l

Rosado

Pale salmon colour, with very dim layer and pink and grey reflections. It is the result of the slight contact of the grape skins with the must before fermentation. It’s very bright and clear, especially attractive in the glass. It has a high aromatic intensity, highlighting mainly the notes of wild red fruits and ripe tropical fruits (passion fruit, mango). Citrus notes and certain creamy shades appear in the background, enveloping the fruity notes and giving it more complexity.

In the palate it’s a very enveloping wine with great smoothness. It has a pleasant sweet entrance, accompanied by a marked persistent acidity, that confers great freshness and durability. The elegance of the Pinot Noir variety is combined with the vivacity of the Callet and the sweetness of the Manto Negro, resulting in a wine with a Mediterranean character, refreshed by the sea breeze from the Bay of Pollença.

Name: Rosado
Vintage: 2019
Grapes: Pinot Noir, Callet, Manto Negro
Alcoholic fermentation: Stainless tank
Alcohol: 12 % vol.
Total acid: 6,12 g/l

Tinto

Cherry colour, it stands out for the vivacity of a wine that is born in privileged surroundings, at the foot of the Tramuntana Mountains and very close to the northern coast of Mallorca. It has a medium intensity, but full of brightness and energy. It stands out for its great complexity of aromas, where the nuances of the lower Mediterranean forest are mixed with the leaf litter and nuts. It is as pleasant as it is complex, the result of the synthesis of the vineyard with its natural environment and of an ecological cultivation that is totally integrated into nature.

In the mouth it stands out for its friendliness and balance, driven by a very good acidity that gives it great length and persistence. It is a wine with a medium structure and velvety sensations, which shows the delicacy of the winemaking by gravity. It is the result of a blend of varieties in a privileged natural environment, always with the Bay of Pollença as a backdrop.

Name: Tinto
Vintage: 2016
Grapes: Callet, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Manto Negro
Alcoholic fermentation: Stainless tank
Alcohol: 13,5 % vol.
Total acid: 5,9 g/l

Blanco

A blend of Muscat blanc à petit grains, Prensal blanc and Callet in shades of medium straw yellow.

This white wine opens with a fragrant aromatic spectrum of ripe pears, honeydew melon, lychee, a touch of lemon curd and provocative nutmeg and rose petals.

Given a swirl, a creamy, velvety texture emerges on the palate of this dry blend creating a charming balance of silkiness and refreshing acidity. The wine embraces its complex Mediterranean character, with rich, exotic fruit, Nashi pear and melon mingling with nutmeg, lemon and orange zest. ‘Blanco’ culminates compellingly with a mouthwatering, delicately bitter bite on the finish.

Name: Blanco
Vintage: 2018
Grapes: Muscat, Premsal Blanc, Callet
Alcoholic fermentation: Stainless tank
Alcohol: 12,5 % vol.
Total acid: 4,6 g/l

Rosado

CanAxartell_Rosado_2018_white-mobile

The 2018 ‘Rosado’ is a blend of Pinot Noir and Callet in pale shades of pink with pearly hues.

The wine is as elegant in the nose as it is in the glass, beginning its performance draped in delicate aromas of cherry and orange blossoms, vineyard peach, fresh pressed blood orange juice and ripe red currants. Nuances of chalk and tropical fruit provide a sophisticated styling. Crisp, linear and juicy on the palate with a warm kiss of Mediterranean sun. The pleasant tartness of red fruit and citrus aromas establish a taut momentum, enhanced with smoky aromas of limestone and herbal spice.

A delicate salinity and lively mineral finish redolent of a soft sea breeze seem to blow across the vineyards from Pollença, across the bay.

Name: Rosado
Vintage: 2018
Grapes: Pinot Noir, Callet
Alcoholic fermentation: Stainless tank
Alcohol: 12 % vol.
Total acid: 5,4 g/l

Tinto Uno

CanAxartell_TintoUno2014-mobile

“Tinto Uno” graces the glass in opaque shades of ruby red with purplish hues.

Marked floral notes of rosebud and violet open into aromas of juicy black cherry, prunes and hints of brioche.
A filigreed acidity is woven throughout the elegant and creamy body of the ‘Tinto Uno,’ brightening the clear and powerful palate and enhancing the wild berry aromas and sophisticated spice. While the power and depth of this balanced beauty is bound within a framework of natural silky tannins, here 100% stainless steel maturation enticingly showcases the fresh and fruity character.

Name: Tinto Uno
Vintage: 2014
Grapes: Callet, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir
Alcoholic fermentation: Edelstahltank
Alcohol: 14,5 % vol.
Total acid: 6,38 g/l

Corum 2018

Straw yellow colour with golden notes, due to the aging for 9 months in foudre. In nose it reflects a high aromatic intensity, result of the terpenic richness of the Malvasía variety. Its ageing in a French oak foudre and the work of the fine lees to keep in suspension, complement the varietal notes with nuances of vanilla, cream and nuts. It results in a highly complex aroma, where floral notes are mixed with hints of stone fruit and tropical tones, accompanied at the end by spicy notes of French oak.

It stands out for its great length in the mouth, result of the good intrinsic acidity that the Malvasía possesses naturally. It has a wide and silky entrance, as a result of the prolonged ageing on lees. In addition, the French oak gives it a certain structure that generates complexity and intensity. In general, it is a very enveloping wine, with a predominantly fresh character, but without losing the pleasant sensations of the Mediterranean essence.

Name: Corum
Vintage: 2018
Grapes: Malvasía
Alcoholic fermentation: 9 month Stainless tank
Alcohol: 12,5 % vol.
Total acid: 5,4 g/l

Terrum 2016

Deep ruby red with purplish hues. Made from Callet, an indigenous variety, 'Terrum' opens with aromatic accents of sour cherry and both red and dark berries. These are overlaid with alluring floral accents and fragrant herbs of thyme, bayberry and juniper. Time in the glass reveals notes of cinnamon and chocolate, dried earth and Mediterranean scrub.

The wine's tremendous freshness on the palate is juxtaposed with rich, ripe fruits. An almost Pinot-like transparency further highlights the Callet's incredible power and clarity, with lively acidity and a striking yet ripe tannic backbone. A well-integrated barrel influence provides stability without dominating the discussion. 'Terrum' skillfully captures the full range of possibility within the Callet: silky, elegant, lively and aromatic.

Name: Terrum 2016
Vintage: 2016
Grapes: Callet
Ageing: 12 month in French oak barrels
Alcohol: 13,5 % vol.
Total acid: 5,3 g/l

Ventum 2016

'Ventum' presents in shades of inky purple with violet hues. Syrah dominates the initial aromatic range, with juicy black forest fruits, cassis and meaty tones. Given time in the glass, Merlot and Callet slowly reveal their charms with notes of damson plum and blackberry, as well as leather, forest floor, Mediterranean scrub and black tea. Yet a cool minerality persists throughout, with bright accents of pepper and Bergamot.

On the palate, ripe black fruit seemingly envelops a sweet core; with each passing minute, stunning components of herbs and spice, reminiscent of wild maquis, juniper and licorice, join the soirée. Barrel aging lends a delicate smokiness to the elegant flavors. What ultimately defines this dark and powerful beauty, however, is its deep minerality with a cool momentum. While the nose hints at this direction, the true reveal only arrives on the palate. It infuses and enhances the fruit, lending juiciness, balancing the elegant tannins and countering the ripeness of the wine.

Name: Ventum 2016
Vintage: 2016
Grapes: Merlot, Syrah, Callet
Ageing: 12 month in French oak barrel
Alcohol: 15,0 % vol.
Total acid: 7,0 g/l

The Artist 2017

Its intense cherry-red colour reflects all the liveliness and intensity of the magnificent 2017 vintage, preserving all the nuances of a wine in its youthful stage.

Its aromatic composition shows great richness and complexity. The notes of wild black fruits blend with sensations of ripe fruit, liquorice and a spicy character that enriches the mosaic of aromas. Also remarkable are the notes of vanilla and cocoa from its aging in French oak barrels.

On the palate it’s a very enveloping wine, with great structure and very persistent; the result of its good level of acidity. It’s a wine that combines the power of the Mediterranean character with the freshness of organic viticulture, achieving a perfect sensory balance. Its velvety character makes it a very pleasant wine with an elegant finish.

The Artist 2016

“The Artist,” a blend, is marked with the characteristic colors of Syrah: inky purple shades laced with violet hues.

Yet that Syrah cedes dominance in the nose to Merlot and the indigenous varieties of Callet and Manto negro. From the glass waft complex aromas of blackberry and blueberry, damson plum and black cherry as well as cinnamon, smoke, toast, cocoa and delicate vanilla. The barrel influence is striking yet nonetheless balanced; it supports rather than dictates. The wine is reminiscent of Majorca’s Serra de Tramuntana with its gnarled olive trees, oak forest, dry underbrush and bare stones.

The true caliber of the wine however reveals itself in the power and complexity on the palate. Here too, the Mediterranean influence reinforces a primarily herbal character balanced with ripe juicy black fruits and a skillful barrel influence. The meaty density is softened with an elegant and delicate acidity and long, lasting finish.
